The NFL‘s Tennessee Titans are hopeful that they will get rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger back in time for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants

When the Tennessee Titans take the field on Sunday, they are hopeful that rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger will be able to join them. Mettenberger is recovering from a should injury suffered on Sunday against the Texans.

Mettenberger left Sunday’s game early in the third quarter after being driven into the ground by Houston’s all-word defensive end J.J. Watt. The injury isn’t believed to be serious, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt says there’s a chance that Mettenberger will play as early as this Sunday.

Tennessee selected Mettenberger in the sixth round of the draft back in May, with no plans that he would start this season. Ineffectiveness and injuries of starter Jake Locker and backup Charlie Whitehurst led the team to make the change to Mettenberger at the position.

Getting back quickly is important for Mettenberger’s future with Tennessee. He’s has played well at times, and he needs to show that he can continue to develop and improve to hold onto the job for next season.

The Titans are currently 2-10, which puts them in position to draft a top quarterback this offseason. Mettenberger must show Whisenhunt and his staff enough over the final four weeks to convince the Titans not to do so.
