The Los Angeles Kings ‘regret’ ‘accidentally’ allowing Slava Voynov to practice

That’s honestly too many quotation marks for me. So be it.

More from Los Angeles Kings

Just hours after being slapped with a $100,000 fine by the NHL for violating the terms of Slava Voynov’s league suspension, the Los Angeles Kings have made a statement regarding the incident.

The fine, of course, was awarded in relation to Voynov practicing with the team Tuesday morning, despite the league’s suspension policy clearly stating that a suspended player may not participate in any team-related activities until he is reinstated. This means that, while Voynov is allowed to skate at the team’s rink, he may not do it as a part of an organized team practice.

Per NHL.com:

"“This was clearly a mistake on our part and we accept full responsibility. It is incumbent upon us to be more vigilant in managing this situation to ensure that Slava’s allowable training activities always remain separate from the team.”"

Voynov is still on indefinite suspension, where he has been since he was arrested on domestic abuse allegations back in late October. He has since pleaded not guilty to the felony charge brought up by the Redondo Beach Police, but the league will not reinstate him until all legal proceedings are finished.

The inclusion of Voynov in what was reportedly an ‘optional skate’ Tuesday morning caused severe backlash from the hockey community, as it showed a rather strong disregard for league policy on the part of the reigning Stanley Cup champions.
