Michael Morse might not have hit 40 home runs last season, but the Baltimore Orioles might be looking at him to replace a guy who did as MLB free agency heats up this off-season.

Right-handed power. We have reached the point where even the most casual baseball fan is vaguely aware of the fact that every team in Major League Baseball is looking for some thump from the right side of the plate.

That need just earned a 37-year-old Nelson Cruz a four-year, $57 million deal with the Seattle Mariners. In turn, Cruz’s deal creates a nice little market for backup options like Michael Morse. It sounds like Cruz’s former team might take a look at Morse.

Bob Nightengale reports that the Baltimore Orioles are interested in signing Morse after losing Cruz (but gaining a draft pick):

Morse did not hit 40 home runs, but he certainly brought some pop for the world champion San Francisco Giants in 2014. In 131 games, Morse batted .279/.336/.475 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI. After playing out 2014 on a one-year deal, he is surely looking for a multi-year deal after a mostly healthy season.

Not to be forgotten is the fact that Morse had a quite forgettable 12-game stint with the Orioles in 2012. He was clearly hurt at the time, something that was reflected in his .103/.133/.103 line in those games.

Maybe this could be a second chance for Morse and the Orioles.
