The words “Dr. James Andrews” and “second opinion on knee” normally do not end with happy endings, which is why the Houston Texans are concerned about Andrews’ Wednesday meeting with rookie linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who will be flying out to Alabama to find out the fate of his injured right knee.
Injuries have hindered Clowney, the first overall pick of the draft, all season. On top of his knee injury, he has had sports hernia surgery along with a concussion that has limited him to four games. Clowney has not played since the Texans’ 22-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on November 23 and is unlikely to suit up when the 6-6 Texans travel to play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
Clowney has just seven total tackles (five solo) this season, yet has earned the respect of teammates and praise from coach Bill O’Brien for his willingness to attempt to play despite his injuries.
“I want to be real clear about this as it relates to the Texans. We think very highly of him,” said O’Brien during his Monday press conference. “We know that he’s going to be a really good player. He has been unlucky.”
The Texans will await Andrews’ opinion, yet it is pretty easy to imagine the team will probably shut him down for the remainder of the 2014 season. Considering the team’s financial investment and his high upside, it sounds like the right move.
