The New York Yankees could potentially be a suitor to sign big-ticket free agent starting pitcher Max Scherzer this off-season as MLB free agency heats up.

Seriously, you guys. The New York Yankees are not going to hand out a big-money, multi-year deal this winter. Seriously. Don’t laugh. The Yankees are not going to make a splashy signing this winter.

Guys, this is not a joke. This is a different approach from Brian Cashman and the front office. They are not going to throw down a huge, multi-year contract this winter because that’s simply not a good fit for them right now.

Sure, it’t not even the winter meetings and they have been linked to the biggest free agent on the market. But don’t fret, this is surely a false alarm.

Because let’s face it, we will all be shocked if the Yankees end up signing the biggest free agent available. John Harper writes that the Yankees could be in pursuit Max Scherzer, especially in light of the rumors that they might prefer Andrew Miller to David Robertson:

"On a day when word leaked that the Yankees are pursuing reliever Andrew Miller, the inevitable question was whether they’re doing so for leverage with David Robertson or at least partly with some grander plan in mind.Like eventually signing Max Scherzer while still salvaging a relatively high draft pick……They’re all-in themselves for 2015, based on all the long-term contracts to which they’re committed, yet they’re probably not good enough to win anything without upgrades somewhere. And as much as they’d like to get younger, there’s little immediate help coming from the farm system. Which leaves their time-honored tradition of writing the biggest check for free agents."

Let’s be real. The Yankees can afford it, again, and so they will probably spend big, again. And if that is indeed where things are headed, they stand to improve significantly if they can sign Scherzer.
