Mathieu was one of four Cardinals who suffered injuries in the game against the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday. He dislocated and fractured his thumb in the contest. The Cardinals said on Monday that Mathieu could be out for three weeks, but Mathieu wants to return at least in time for the Week 16 game against the Seahawks. A game that could very well determine the winner of the NFC West.
In a story by ESPN, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said the best case scenario for Mathieu would be for him to be able to play this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, albeit with a cast on his thumb. The worst case would be if the doctors put a pin in his thumb, which would likely sideline him for three weeks. The time between the Atlanta game and the Seattle game on December 21st is about three weeks.
The Cardinals are 9-3 going into their Week 14 matchup against the Chiefs. Their six game winning streak was broken against the Seahawks in Week 12 and they’ve now lost two in a row. Meanwhile, the Seahawks are only one game back and if they win out, including beating the Cardinals in Arizona, they then take the NFC West title.
The Cardinals need to find their winning ways again as they face three teams out of their last four games still clinging to playoff contention and a suddenly resurgent St. Louis Rams team. They could definitely use their starting safety back as soon as possible.
