The Los Angeles Kings have spent much of the calendar year locking up key pieces of a team that has won two Stanley Cups in the last three years. Defenseman Alec Martinez became the latest on Wednesday when he and the Kings came to terms on a six-year contract extension worth a reported $24 million.

Martinez scored 22 points in 61 games last season and was a vital presence on the second line, as he recorded 96 hits and 75 blocks. A broken finger kept Martinez out for seven games this season before he returned for Tuesday’s 2-0 win over the Boston Bruins. He has two goals and five assists with a +9 in 18 games this year.

The Michigan native was a fourth round pick by the Kings in the 2007 draft and made his NHL debut when he appeared in four games during the 2009-10 season. Martinez has 25 goals and 37 assists in 224 career games.

Martinez joins a host of Kings that have been signed to long-term deals, which includes Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Drew Doughty, Marion Gaborik, Jake Muzzin, Jonathan Quick and Mike Richards.

Los Angeles is currently fourth in the Pacific Division with 31 points, trailing the surprising Vancouver Canucks (35 points), Anaheim Ducks (35) and Calgary Flames (34). The Kings will face the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday and host the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday before embarking on a five-game road trip out east.
