Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez and Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll will meet for the second time in the NFL, which harkens them to their days together before either joined the professional ranks.
Sanchez quarterbacked the USC Trojans, then coached by Pete Carroll, to great success, which was marred by a contentious parting of ways. Years later, the two return to the same field as old friends with new opponents.
“He texted me during preseason – you’re doing awesome, so happy to see you back, having fun,” Sanchez said per the Philadelphia Inquirer, “that means the world to me, because that’s somebody I really respect. I had so much fun playing for him. It’ll be good to see him again . . . He’s a really good coach and a good friend.”
Sanchez and Carroll went through some public tension when Sanchez left USC a year early for the NFL draft, a decision that Carroll didn’t care for. Sanchez went fifth overall to the New York Jets though and met Carroll down the road when the Jets lost 28-7 to Carroll’s Seattle Seahawks.
“We turned the ball over in the red zone one time, and we just weren’t very efficient,” Sanchez said of the game. “We ran the ball OK; we were kind of in the game for a little bit, and then it just got away from us, because we didn’t take care of the football.”
Sanchez will have a better opportunity to make amends on that result as the Eagles stand atop the NFC East with a chance to bring down a prime conference foe in the Seahawks.
