Mike Ditka wants any Rams players who silently protest for Ferguson to get off his lawn.

The slaying of 18-year old Michael Brown has once again stoked the coals of American politics, as the country is divided over every aspect of the issue from the racial overtones to the fallout from the non-intcitment. The rioting and looting has become an easy target for those supporting officer Darren Wilson while the rage from the non-inditement is still fueling those who see the killing as an injustice.

It’s an incredibly versatile situation, but it’s one that a few St. Louis Rams players waded into on Sunday afternoon when they silently protested the decision to not indict Darren Wilson. Naturally, this made grumpy Hall of Fame head coach Mike Ditka even grumpier, as he didn’t see the reason why the players were protesting.

Ditka addressed the issue in his weekly column for the Chicago Tribune, and he stated his embarrassment for the players protesting.

"“It’s a shame this thing has come to this,” Ditka told the Chicago Sun-Times for his weekly feature column. “The shame of it is, I’m not sure they care about Michael Brown or anything else. This was a reason to protest and to go out and loot. Is this the way to celebrate the memory of Michael Brown? Is this an excuse to be lawless? Somebody has to tell me that. I don’t understand it. I understand what the Rams’ take on this was. I’m embarrassed for the players more than anything. They want to take a political stand on this? Well, there are a lot of other things that have happened in our society that people have not stood up and disagreed about."

It’s worth pointing out that Ditka is a devout conservative who is opposed to President Obama and generally distrustful of the American government. That helps explain his stance on the issue but doesn’t excuse the hypocrisy.

The easy target in going after protesters in Ferguson is the looting, but that’s a lazy argument. Ditka — and so many others including Charles Barkley — are calling out the looters and damning them for violently protesting. Yet, when a few football players silently protest in the most non violent way possible — juxtaposed against the most violent sport in America — that’s still somehow wrong.

It just goes to show how versatile the situation is and how everyone has officially waded too deep to comprehend all that is going on around them.
