The Montreal Canadiens announced via their website that NHL legend Jean Beliveau passed on Tuesday night at 83 years of age. He is survived by his wife Élise, his daughter Hélène and granddaughters Magalie and Mylène. Beliveau served as team captain in Montreal for a decade while scoring at more than a point-per-game pace for his entire career.

Montreal Canadiens president Geoff Moulson released the following statement in response.

"“The Montreal Canadiens organization is extremely moved by Mr. Béliveau’s passing away. Like millions of hockey fans who followed the life and the career of Jean Béliveau, the Canadiens today mourn the passing of a man whose contribution to the development of our sport and our society was unmeasurable. Jean Béliveau was a great leader, a gentleman and arguably the greatest ambassador our game has ever known.”"

The Canadiens have the most Stanley Cups in NHL history by a wide margin largely because of players like Jean Beliveau, who retired in 1971 having tallied 1,219 points in 1,215 games to go with 10 Stanley Cup championships, two Hart trophies, one Conn Smythe trophy and one Art Ross trophy.

After said retirement, Beliveau’s number was immediately raised to the rafters by the Canadiens and the Hockey Hall of Fame waived the three-year waiting period and inducted him straight away. He was then part of a management team that brought seven more Stanley Cups to Montreal.
