Toad has played a prominent role in many Nintendo games of the past, but for the first time, he is being put front and center as the main attraction on the Nintendo Wii U. In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, both Toad and Toadette navigate through a vast array of puzzles in an experience that is truly exceptional.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker isn’t quite a platformer, but it’s not a full-blown puzzle experience either. The environments created and displayed throughout the game, however, are more than wonderful. Manipulating the camera to travel through the puzzles and the world around you, a six-hour journey through Treasure Tracker will have you begging for more.

There’s roughly 70 stages in Treasure Tracker, and each provides a unique level of difficulty. The gamepad is utilized well throughout the game, and as you complete each stage, a level of satisfaction is felt having navigated Toad to his destination perfectly.

Treasure Tracker allows gamers to play at their own discretion. While most levels are relatively simple to complete and require you to grab a star prior to moving on, the additional challenge comes in the form of grabbing optional objectives. The lay out of the game allows you to truly test yourself to whatever extent you feel comfortable.

Unlike a typical Nintendo game, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker plays through without any text popping up. Both Toad and Toadette are given a very real feel as the emotionally react to different outcomes during the game. It helps to bring a life like feel to the two lovable characters.

For the completionists out there, Captain Toad will feel somewhat disconnected. Forcing you to page through all 70 stages to find out what you have left is less than ideal. However, considering the game is relatively short, expecting multiple playthroughs is probably likely.

Although the menu system isn’t great, at it’s core, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a great game that takes the puzzle experience to the next step. Using great graphics to depict exciting locales, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a must play this holiday season.

The Good:

  • Great graphics
  • Fun gameplay and characters
  • Intuitive puzzle features

The Bad:

  • Less than ideal menus
  • Wonky controls at times
