After falling in a rather disappointing 4-1 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday night, the St. Louis Blues have made the decision to start their shiny new toy — for the first time in his 22-year NHL career, Martin Brodeur will take the ice to start a game for someone other than the Devils.
Brodeur inked a one-year, $700,000 deal with the Central Division franchise, which includes bonuses based on the number of games played.
This deal comes on the heels of an injury to one of St. Louis’ two rising star starters, Brian Elliott — while rookie Jake Allen may be perfectly competent, the team didn’t want to rely on him and an AHL call-up until Elliott made his return.
Brodeur was one of a few veteran netminders still available on the free agent market after failing to ink a contract during the off-season; although many were advocating his retirement, many others support his decision to keep playing in whatever capacity he can. He may no longer be the guy who can shut down virtually any team in the league, but he’s still a pretty good goalie — and the Blues seem to agree.
