The New York Yankees signed left-handed reliever Andrew Miller to a four-year deal worth $36 million to be the team’s setup man and insurance in case they lose closer David Robertson in free agency

Andrew Miller turned down more money on the free agent market to sign a four-year deal worth $36 million to become a New York Yankee, agreeing to the richest contract for a setup man.

Miller, 29, was a highly-coveted reliever on the free agent market this winter after a career-best 2.02 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 62.1 innings for the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles in 2014.

His familiarity with the American League East where he’s been since the Boston Red Sox acquired him in 2011 should result in a seamless transition for Miller who turned down more money from the Houston Astros to sign with the Yankees, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Miller’s contract surpasses the $35 million the Yankees paid Rafael Soriano after 2010 as the richest paid to a setup man, but Nightengale tweets Miller won’t just be a setup man and will also get the opportunity to close some games this year.

Last year’s closer David Robertson is a free agent so if he signs elsewhere this could be an even better signing if Miller can handle closing duties should the team lose out in their pursuit of Robertson. At the very least it gives the team an insurance policy should Robertson sign elsewhere.
