By now everyone knows of the, let’s say, interesting game plan in the Jets latest loss. It went something like this: run, run again, run some more. It resulted in 277 rushing yards for the Jets, and also, a loss. Also lost in the narrative was Chris Johnson’s 17 rushes for 105 yards, proving that he still has something left.
But Johnson is another thing that the Jets have failed to make the most of this season.
"Johnson said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “When you look at what I’ve done and the yards per carry, I think I could have had a big year.”"
As Pro Football Talk points out, Johnson is instead only getting 36 percent of the snaps, with the vast majority going to fellow back Chris Ivory. Johnson’s yard total for the year so far is 505 yards, a career low. Also at a career low is his carries, at 109. His average yards per carry, however, is a pretty solid 4.6, good enough for third highest in his career.
It’s just another story of missed opportunities for the Jets. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg also expressed regret at not getting Johnson the ball more. The time for that is likely running out though. Not only could the Jets save $3.5 million in cap space by cutting Johnson this offseason, a housecleaning of both staff and players seems to be just over the horizon.
"“Of course I wish I was in a situation where I was the lead guy,” Johnson said. “But right now at this point there’s nothing I can do about it. I can’t go back and change anything. I have enjoyed my time here with the guys.”"
