Maybe next time Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth decides to go out for a drive, he’ll think twice about the consequences of speeding 50 miles-per-hour over the speed limit in Northern Virginia. Then again, he may may not be driving for quite a while after what he got on Friday morning from the court.
In MLB, speed is everything. On the streets, it can mean some serious jail time. In August Werth was clocked going 105 miles-per-hour in a 55 miles-per-hour zone. Reported on Bleacher Report, on Friday he was jailed for 10 days and loses his drivers license. He was actually sentenced to 180 days of jail but 170 of those are suspended. That was per NBCWashington.com’s Julie Carey.
Per reports, he is being processed for jail at this time and will likely serve five of the 10 days. If that’s the case, he should consider himself lucky.
As it turns out, it appears Werth though believes he was punished too harshly.
Werth had a decent 2014 season for the Nats. He hit .292 with 16 home runs and 82 RBI. He didn’t perform nearly that well in the NLDS against the San Francisco Giants. In that series he had just one hit in 17 at-bats for an .059 average.
