The NFL is investigating the Dallas Cowboys after comments made by quarterback Tony Romo after Thursday night’s win against the Chicago Bears that he had been playing with broken ribs that were not documented on the injury report

Tony Romo said he had been playing with broken ribs after leading the Cowboys to their ninth win of the season on Thursday night in Soldier Field against the Bears, which came as a surprise considering the injury did not show up on the team’s injury report, a violation of league rules.

According to the NFL’s injury report policy, via ESPN, “All players with significant or noteworthy injuries must be listed on the report, even if the player takes all the reps in practice, and even if the team is certain that he will play in the upcoming game.”

ESPN’s report says Romo misspoke on the NFL Network last night and rather than playing through broken ribs actually played with torn rib cartilage believed to have occurred in the team’s Oct. 12 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Romo has been listed on the injury report all year with his back, but failing to disclose the rib ailment could result in the team being fined. Similar precedent was established in 2009 when the New York Jets were fined $125,000 for not disclosing Brett Favre’s torn biceps tendon he played with in the final month of the season.

As for the injury itself, it hasn’t prevented Romo from missing any snaps this year and had this before in 2008 and didn’t miss any time and is wearing extra rip protection to avoid aggravating the injury.
