Orioles Discussing Trade For Dodgers Outfielder Matt Kemp

The Baltimore Orioles have lost two outfielders so far in free agency and they have been in discussions to acquire LA Dodgers outfielder, Matt Kemp.

The Orioles would be going slightly younger if they managed to snag Matt Kemp, he’s 30 compared to 31-year-old Nick Markakis, who just decided to have neck surgery, and 34-year-old Nelson Cruz. The Orioles have been showing interest in Matt Kemp for about a week now, but Ken Rosenthal reports that the team is still discussing the Dodgers outfielder.

What do the Orioles get if they land Kemp?

He hit .287 last year for the Dodgers, with an .852 OPS, 25 home runs and 89 RBI. He’s also had a history of being injured. He missed roughly half the 2013 season due to ankle and shoulder injuries. However, he was healthy in 2014, playing 150 games. Kemp signed an eight-year deal in 2011, which means his contract goes through 2019. He has $107 million left on that deal.

Kemp’s career average is .292 and he led the NL in home runs in 2011, also finishing second in MVP award balloting that same season.

The Orioles aren’t the only team in on Kemp, of course. The Seattle Mariners, apparently not done looking for bats, are in, as are the San Diego Padres. Baltimore arguably has a greater need, having lost two outfielders, but they are typically reluctant to shell out and reports say that they are relatively far away from Kemp in terms of compensation. There is also the question of whether the Dodgers are ready to pull the trigger on letting Kemp go.
