Settlement talks between the NFL and NFLPA regarding Adrian Peterson began on Wednesday and ended on Thursday. According to rule, a decision must be made by arbitrator Harold Henderson as soon as possible. The hearing ended with testimony by Troy Vincent, the NFL’s executive VP of football operations. Vincent was expected to testify in regards to comments he allegedly made to Peterson about a much shorter suspension time than he actually got.
Despite the rule about when a deal must come down, the NFL and NFLPA can still work something out on their own. However, the settlement would have to be reached before Henderson makes a decision.
"Per a source with knowledge of the situation, a settlement of Peterson’s unpaid suspension under the personal conduct policy remains possible. (per Pro Football Talk)"
Henderson has already expressed his preference that the two sides work something else and that he would prefer not to issue a ruling. He will most likely be monitoring the settlement talks closely. The NFL would have gotten the best value out of settling the case before a testimony by Vincent, but it’s still better for them to settle now rather than see another written decision that might make them look worse.
"Peterson was placed on the exempt list after he was indicted on felony charges of reckless injury to a child. He pleaded no contest on November 4th to misdemeanor reckless assault for hitting his young son with a switch."
