Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose wore an “I Can’t Breathe” shirt Saturday night before their game in memory of Eric Garner, who died in police custody in New York.

Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls made a social statement Saturday night before the Bulls played host to the Golden State Warriors at the United Center, warming up for the game in a shirt bearing the words “I Can’t Breathe.”

The shirt references Eric Garner, who was killed while in police custody in Staten Island, N.Y., when he was placed in a chokehold by police officer Daniel Pantoleo.

In a video of the incident, Garner says, “I can’t breathe” before going into cardiac arrest. Garner’s death was ruled a homicide, but a grand jury in Staten Island chose not to indict Pantoleo in connection with the incident.

Last Sunday, a group of St. Louis Rams players came out during pregame introductions in the “hands up, don’t shoot” gesture before a game against the Oakland Raiders.

That was in support of protesters in Ferguson, Mo., where Mike Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9. A grand jury similarly chose not to indict the police officer, sparking days of protests and clashes with police in the St. Louis suburb.

Protesters completed a march Friday from Ferguson to the Missouri capital city of Columbia to lobby Gov. Jay Wilson to hold the local prosecutor in the Wilson case accountable for not taking the case to trial.
