The San Francisco Giants are showing serious interest in MLB free agent third baseman Chase Headley.

The Giants are in pretty dire need of a third baseman since losing Pablo Sandoval to the Boston Red Sox last month. According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Giants are going aggressively in the direction of Chase Headley.

The New York Yankees would probably like to keep Headley too, but per a story by Hard Ball Talk, are unlikely to give him five years in order to do so. Headley reportedly already has a four year deal on the table worth $65 million, but the team involved is unknown. It’s unlikely to be the Yankees, as they are reluctant to give him more than three years. The Miami Marlins were also linked with Headley, but quickly cooled after hearing about the $65 million.

That leaves the Giants. Considering they were about to give Sandoval a contract worth $95 million, it’s very possible that they are the mystery team offering Headley $65 million. The amount is a good deal more than predicted would go to Headley in free agency.

Also interesting to note is that the Giants have been linked with free agent starting pitcher Jon Lester and reportedly very interested in him as well. As Rosenthal notes, the pursuit of Headley may not affect their interest in Lester at all, and technically they can probably afford both players, if necessary.

Headley will be 31 next May and batted .243/.328/.372 over the 2014 season, including 13 home runs and 49 RBI. He played in 135 games with the Padres and Yankees combined.
