The Seattle Mariners already added Nelson Cruz to bolster their offense this winter, but rumors are that they could also sign Melky Cabrera as MLB Free Agency heats up.

The Mariners entered this off-season with the stated intentions of adding help on offense. They weren’t kidding around.

The team already signed Nelson Cruz to a four-year, $56 million deal. Now they might also be looking to sign free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera, possibly to a similar deal.

Suffice it to say that the Mariners are over their beef with players who have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Jon Heyman of CBS reports the following about the Mariners’ interest in Cabrera:

"The Mariners, seeking a top outfielder after bolstering their offense with DH Nelson Cruz, are talking to Melky Cabrera, who they apparently view as an ideal No. 2 hitter.Cabrera has been seen as preferring to stay East but someone close to him said he’s scaled that geographic hurdle and would consider Seattle. The Mariners have Cabrera’s great friend Robinson Cano in addition to Cruz, and Seattle appears very serious about winning after missing the playoffs by one game in 2014."

Somebody needs to come up with a friendship metric to assess Robinson Cano’s $240 million contract. Cruz cited his friendship with Cano as part of the reason he chose the Mariners, and now that might be a factor if they land Cabrera.

If you are talking about a heart of the order in Seattle that goes Cabrera, Cano, Cruz, and then Kyle Seager, you are talking about a lineup that could thump on a level the Mariners haven’t seen in quite some time.
