Marshall won Conference USA for the first time in program history after overcoming a 17-7 in the second quarter and a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to knock off Louisiana Tech to win the game and the conference title.
The Thundering Herd had their bid for a perfect season and a New Year’s Day bowl dashed the day after Thanksgiving when they lost 67-66 to Western Kentucky in overtime after the Hilltoppers successfully converted a two-point conversion after their touchdown in overtime. But they still won the conference championship in an otherwise brilliant season for Rakeem Cato and the Herd.
Cato threw two touchdowns in the game to extend his FBS record to 45 consecutive games with a touchdown pass. His streak is second only to Mike Reilly who had a touchdown pass in 46 straight games from 2005-2008 while at Division II Central Washington. Cato also threw for 308 yards and the game-winning touchdown to Deon-Tay McManus from five yards out with 1:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Marshall now waits to find out where their bowl game will be and the latest bowl projections from ESPN entering the game had the Herd playing in either the Boca Raton Bowl or the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl.
The bowl announcements will begin tomorrow afternoon and continue throughout the day.
