For all the attention paid to the Big 12 and the situation with the no. 3 TCU Horned Frogs and the no. 6 Baylor Bears, the no. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes want you to know that they have a statement win of their own. Facing the no. 13 Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten title game, Ohio State won decisively by a final score of 59-0.
This game got so ugly, the normally excitable Gus Johnson sounded downtrodden on the play-by-play call by the time the fourth quarter started. I think the poor guy just wanted them to call the fight.
Cardele Jones is the third string quarterback for the Buckeyes. He was thrust into action on this big stage due to the fact that J.T. Barrett broke his ankle against Michigan. To say that Jones was up to the task would be to vastly undersell what he accomplished in this conference title game.
Jones opened the scoring with a TD strike to Devin Smith.
He would then continue the onslaught through the air with another strike to Smith, who ended up with 137 yards receiving and three touchdowns in this game.
In total, Jones went 12-for-17 through the air for 257 yards and three touchdowns. One of the primary reasons he did not need to attempt more passes than that was the ridiculous work of Ezekiel Elliott on the ground.
Elliott ran for 220 yards on 20 carries. That’s 11.0 yards per attempt, boys and girls. His efforts included a beautiful 81 yard touchdown run.
This was not just about the Ohio State offense, however. This was a complete victory from wire to wire, with the Buckeyes’ defense putting together just as dominant a performance. Wisconsin was held to just 245 total yards and committed four turnovers. Quarterback Joel Stave went a depressing 13-for-35 through the air with the aforementioned three interceptions, stifled by the Ohio State defense all game.
What about Heisman Trophy candidate Melvin Gordon, you wonder? The Badgers’ stud running back was also held in check, gaining just 76 yards on 26 carries, good for a measly 2.9 yards per attempt. The Buckeyes were overwhelming in every facet of the game, including their run defense against one of the best in the nation.
For the many years of BCS controversy, it was difficult to assess Ohio State because they did not have to play a conference championship game. Now Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes find themselves coming off a big win in a conference championship game and jostling with two teams from a conference, the Big 12, that did not have such.
It will be up to the 12-person committee to decide who are the top four teams are on Sunday morning, but needless to say, the Buckeyes just added another wrinkle to that conversation by humiliating a good Wisconsin team in this Big Ten title game.
