Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer underwent throat surgery this week and is said to be doing well. He’s expected to coach the Hokies in their bowl game.

The streak will live on, it appears.

Virginia Tech announced Saturday that football coach Frank Beamer underwent successful surgery on his throat. He is expected to recover in time to coach the Hokies when they play in their bowl game.

"“We waited until the end of the regular season to surgically address an issue with Coach Beamer’s throat,” Dr. Gunnar Brolinson said."

Brolinson is the head team physician for the football program.

"“The procedure went as planned, without complications, and he simply needs some rest before he returns to his normal routine,” Brolinson said. “He’s been cleared to continue his game planning and film study and will return to the practice field as soon as possible.“I fully expect Coach Beamer to coach in his 22nd consecutive bowl game.”"

The Hokies had to work to get Beamer in a position to coach that 22nd consecutive bowl game. Virginia Tech beat Virginia 24-20 on Nov. 28 to improve to 6-6 and become bowl eligible.

Phil Steele projects Virginia Tech to play Florida in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., on Dec. 27.

Beamer has coached at Virginia Tech since 1987 and took the Hokies to a bowl game for the first time after the 1993 season. They have been to a bowl game every season since then.

In 28 seasons in Blacksburg, Beamer has a record of 230-115-2. Virginia Tech played once for the BCS National Championship, losing to Florida State 46-29 in the Sugar Bowl following the 1999 season.
