Jay Gruden wants to see if the Washington Redskins can build around quarterback Colt McCoy throughout the remainder of the NFL season.

The Washington Redskins have gone through a lot of drama this season with the whole Jay Gruden and Robert Griffin III situation, and Colt McCoy has gotten the chance to step into the starting role because of it. He has shown a lot of potential this season, and there is good reason to believe that he could end up being a very solid starting quarterback if given the chance.

Gruden appears ready to give him that chance, and would like to see if the Redskins could build around McCoy throughout the remainder of the regular season.

From Sports Illustrated:

"“You don’t want to have competition at that position all the time. You’d like to have a guy you can say, ‘Hey, this is our quarterback, fellas. Let’s build our team around him!’ And then you have the competition between No. 2 and 3. We’ll see what happens these last four games. Then as a staff we’ll have to talk about the future of the position — whether we’re going to build around Colt, whether we’re going to have a competition between Colt and Robert and Kirk [Cousins].”"

Quite simply, Griffin has given the Redskins and Gruden no reason to believe that he can get back to his rookie season form. He was definitely a franchise quarterback in that season, but injuries have completely derailed his career. There is no question that he has the potential to turn things around, but he’ll have to prove that to the coaching staff and front office before they view him as a future star.

McCoy has played in four games so far this season, throwing for 1,018 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. Those numbers aren’t bad at all, and they quite simply give the Redskins a reason to give him more playing time.

There is no denying the success that McCoy had in college with the Texas Longhorns, and he has shown some flashes of that this year in Washington. If he could reach his full potential, there is no doubt that he would be a starting quarterback with potential to lead the franchise forward. Gruden isn’t happy with Griffin, and he seems to have zeroed in on the guy that he wants around long-term if McCoy can prove that he deserves the opportunity.
