Tampa Bay Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy Plays With Dislocated Knee Cap
By Phil Watson
Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy left Sunday’s game in Detroit on the first series with a knee injury, but returned … somehow.
Gerald McCoy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is tougher than you.
OK, that might be a bit strong. But he’s tougher than me.
McCoy exited Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions after injuring his knee on Detroit’s first drive of the game but later returned.
He returned despite having what is being reported to be a dislocated knee cap.
Not a stinger. Not a cramp. Not a bruise. A dislocated freaking knee cap. As in a knee cap in a location other than where it’s supposed to be. Having never attempted to play football with a dislocated knee cap, I can’t speak with any level of confidence how it feels to do so. I’m going to, however, go out on a limb and say it probably stings a little. McCoy didn’t go into detail.
The Bucs were officially eliminated from playoff contention with their 34-17 loss, falling to 2-11—hey, thanks to the NFC South they were still in the race into Week 14—and McCoy had two tackles, one for loss.
McCoy was the third overall pick by the Bucs out of Oklahoma in 2010 and he was an All-Pro selection last year with 50 tackles and 9½ sacks.
This season, McCoy has 34 stops and 8 ½ sacks in 11 games. He missed a couple of games in September with a broken hand.
