Jeff Samardzija was traded in the middle of the 2014 MLB season, and it sounds like he is on the move again as recent trade rumors suggest that the Oakland A’s are on the verge of trading him to the Chicago White Sox for young shortstop Marcus Semien.

Things are getting weird in Oakland.

Billy Beane and company traded one of the most highly regarded shortstop prospects in the game in Addison Russell as part of the deal that landed the A’s Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. Now Hammel is gone, and Beane is about to trade Samardzija to get a young shortstop.

If that feels circular, that’s because it is circular. If nothing else, it shows that Samardzija was truly a rental. That said, the decision to trade Russell was not necessarily a well-regarded one at the time, so this trade rings a little strange for the A’s.

Jon Heyman reports that the trade is almost final:

As for the White Sox, they now add Samardzija to the top of a starting rotation that already touts Chris Sale as its ace. In an American League Central that was relatively weak last season, they just might be able to contend this season. More interesting yet, the White Sox might not be done yet with major moves this off-season.
