New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan told media after the team’s most recent loss that he, not owner Woody Johnson, was to blame for the team’s failure.

Rex Ryan understands his New York Jets are a flaming disaster in 2014. He clearly has no answer to turn things around this season, which isn’t placating anyone at this point. Ryan knows all that, but he also knows one other thing. It’s not owner Woody Johnson’s fault and if people are still looking for one person to blame, they can keep their sights squarely on Rex, who’s doing and saying all he can to keep his job beyond this season.

“I’m responsible for this,” Ryan said after the team’s 30-24 overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings, per ESPN, “and I’ll tell Woody and our fans and everybody else: This is on me.”

Rex continued, “Obviously, I deserve a lot of criticism for the way this team has performed this season. I get that, no question, but Woody doesn’t. The Jets are in good hands with him as the owner, that’s for sure.”

Rex Ryan sounds like a guy desperately clinging to his job, eager to show his willingness to jump on the sword as the Jets cave in from every angle. See, Woody. He’s still a team player! Won’t you please keep him on?

Johnson is highly rumored to be considering razing the organization to the floor and starting over. That would mean Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik would be out the door.

Like any good NFL employee, Rex would likely prefer that not happen. Hence his fawning over the owner who’s probably just as responsible for this mess as anyone.

“Woody’s a competitor, he wants what’s best for this football team,” Ryan said. “He’s passionate and he wants to put a great product on the field.”
