Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton suffered two lower back fractures in a scary car accident that could have been a lot worse than it was.

Cam Newton was involved in a two car accident on Tuesday afternoon which saw his pickup truck rollover as many as four times after being hit by a car that missed a stop sign at an intersection. The accident happened not far from the Panthers team facility, and initial fears were much worse surrounding Cam Newto’s health given the severity of the accident and the images coming from the scene.

Despite how bad the accident looked, Newton escaped the situation with far fewer and less severe injuries than anyone thought as his official diagnosis has been released.

According to the Panthers, Newton suffered two Transerve Process Fractures in his lower back in th car accident.

This is the same injury that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered earlier this season when he was destroyed against the Washington Redskins. Obviously, the two situations stop being similar at the point of the injury, as Romo’s injury was sustained in the field of play while Newton’s was the result of a serious car accident.

What the injury means is that Newton is likely out for this Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as the Panthers will have to continue their playoff push without him in the hopes that he can recover in time to help the team if they clinch a berth.
