Bruce Levine on Twitter reported that the Cubs are finalizing a deal with the veteran catcher out of Arizona. Montero, who finished up last season with a .243 average and 13 homers, will look to capitalize on the friendly confines of Wrigley Park.
The Cubs seem to be on the up and up as they replace Wellington Castillo with this move, as Montero could prove to really help this team generate some offense for a team that could never seem to get much going behind the plate. Adding in Montero would seem to indicate the Cubs are going to look to try and compete this year and not trade away talent for the future. The Cubs faithful can only hope that is the case.
The Cubs will also look to Montero to provide some veteran leadership behind the plate to this team’s core of young and upcoming players like Starlin Castro, Jorge Soler and Javy Baez.
I think the Cubs still likely have a long way to go, but adding Joe Maddon as manager and this signing seem to show a commitment from Theo Epstein the President of Baseball Operations to break this severely long postseason drought the Cubs have been in.
