It was a bad night for the folks over at the worldwide leader, with ESPN being fooled by a fake Ken Rosenthal Twitter account regarding the Jeff Samardzija trade.

Late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, the Oakland Athletics agreed to a deal that sent pitcher Jeff Samardzija to the Chicago White Sox.

The deal went through at approximately 1:15 a.m. ET.

However, ESPN had sent out a tweet regarding the news at the top of the hour citing FOX Sports. There was a problem with that report, though, because it came from a fake Ken Rosenthal account.

Whoops.

Every time the rumors in the sports world start picking up, we see fake Twitter accounts popping up all over the place from notable reporters, but this time a major news outlet actually was duped.

If there is one positive to this story, it is that ESPN actually credited FOX Sports instead of the mysterious “multiple media reports.”

It is just a shame they got it wrong.
