Kobe Bryant and his teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers were the latest NBA players to wear ‘I can’t breathe’ t-shirts during pre-game warm-ups.
Eric Garner said he couldn’t breathe before he died in an incident with a New York police officer. That officer, Daniel Pantaleo, was not indicted by a grand jury, and people have spoken out loudly against the decision in the time since.

In the NBA, we have seen a number of players wear shirts that say “I can’t breathe” to express their feelings about the incident. Derrick Rose, LeBron James, and Kyrie Irving were among the players to wear the shirts. Now Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers are the latest to wear those symbolic shirts during warm-ups.
Bryant and his Lakers’ teammates were all wearing the now-famous t-shirts that say “I can’t breathe,” in reference to Garner’s words as a police officer continued to hold him and choke him.

Thankfully NBA commissioner Adam Silver was smart enough to know that players should not be disciplined for wearing the shirts, even if there is probably a clause somewhere that states that such t-shirts are against the rules.
Thankfully the current commissioner, like the NBA players speaking out, understands that this situation is much bigger than basketball.
