NFL Power Rankings: 30 Best Coaches of All-Time
By Will Osgood
2. Bill Parcells (1983-2006)
It would have been wrong to place the pupil above the mentor, if for no other reason than Belichick might be getting a call from the always irritated Bill Parcells. The two have similar backgrounds and both were born to coach football, though Belichick was probably more of a purely football nut. But there is little doubt that Belichick uses many of Parcells’ tactics, especially in relation to sideline antics and overall philosophy.
The same could be said of Saints Head Coach Sean Payton. Both are noted Parcells disciples. The list is actually quite extensive. Directly, or indirectly, Tom Coughlin can make a claim. So can Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel and current Raiders interim coach Tony Sparano.
It is an impressive list that goes beyond what is listed here. In 19 seasons, with the Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys, Parcells won .570 of his games, led his teams to 10 playoffs apperances, winning .579 percent of those, three conference championships and two Super Bowls.
