Dan Haren now faces a decision about whether he will pitch for the Miami Marlins or retire from Major League Baseball.

Veteran starting pitcher Dan Haren had a $10 million option vest for the 2015 season. At age 34, however, Haren seriously considered retiring rather than returning to the mound for another season. In the end, Haren decided to return to pitch…for the Los Angeles Dodgers, that is.

Nobody said anything about pitching for the Marlins, however.

Haren was one of the pieces of a mega-trade on Wednesday night that also sent Dee Gordon to the Marlins in exchange for a boatload of cost-controlled prospects. Now it sounds like retirement might become a serious consideration for Haren once again.

Early word is that the Marlins should not get their hopes up about Dan Haren making an appearance in their starting rotation next season.

Maybe the Marlins calculated this into their analysis of the trade package, but this is still an odd dynamic to a big trade that just went through at the MLB Winter Meetings.
