New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith proclaimed himself to be a Pro-Bowl quarterback at times, but that he must strive for consistency.

As the New York Jets slog through the final games of a disastrous 2014 NFL season, second-year quarterback Geno Smith remains defiantly confident in his own abilities. Despite his struggles and those of the team around him, he believes has Pro Bowl talent and lots of room to improve. The question now is whether he’ll have time to prove as much to the Jets.

“I’ve shown flashes of being a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback, but what we’re looking for here is consistency. The best teams have consistent quarterback play and I realize that and that’s truly what I want to show to the fans and everyone outside the building,” Smith said per Newsday.

The only consistency Smith has found in his two years in the NFL has been an ability to consistently score touchdowns for the other team. He threw 21 interceptions in 16 starts in his rookie season last year and in 11 appearances in 2014, Smith has thrown 12 picks. In all, Smith has 20 touchdown passes to 33 interceptions and seven rushing TDs to two lost fumbles.

No one can make the Pro Bowl when they’re a turnover machine, so if Geno Smith truly wants consistency, he can probably start there. As for getting more chances with the Jets beyond this season, Smith remained optimistic.

“If anyone wants to know if I’m the future or the franchise [quarterback], you can just look at the way I’ve handled myself in the face of adversity,” Smith concluded. “Success is easy to handle at times, but I think the true test of a man is how he handles himself when things aren’t going as well.”
