Minnesota Wild Win On Four-Goal Third Period Comeback (Video)
By Cory Buck
The Minnesota Wild overcame a three goal third period deficit to defeat the visiting New York Islanders 5-4.
The last thing the Minnesota Wild needed was another home loss. The team has floundered in the competitive Western Conference this season despite high expectations at its onset. Down 4-1 in the third period to the New York Islanders, it appeared things would only get worse from there. Instead, the team rattled off four third period goals to come back and claim victory. All it took was a spark and the team got that early in the third period when captain Mikko Koivu buried a wrist shot to make it a two-goal game. From there, it was all about the Wild’s skill players taking over.
The struggling Thomas Vanek got in on the act to tie the game before youngster Nino Niederreiter buried the game winner with less than five minutes to play in regulation.
The Islanders need less help staying afloat in the Metropolitan Division, where the team still sits firmly in second place, eight points ahead of second place Washington Capitals.
That shouldn’t help this loss sting any less for the club though. Any time a team can travel out west and get a win is a big night, and this young squad will surely miss those points in the playoff race later this season.
