Despite their efforts dating back to last summer, the Philadelphia Flyers have been unable to trade center Vincent Lecavalier, even as the team benches him.

At 34 years old, Vincent Lecavalier believes he has enough in the tank to contribute to a playoff effort in the NHL. The Philadelphia Flyers would love to believe him, but it looks like their patience has worn thin with the veteran center. They’ve recently made Lecavalier a healthy scratch and despite their best efforts, the team has been unable to find a taker on the trade market for the last 3+ years on his contract.

The feelings are mutual as far as a trade goes. Lecavalier wants to join a team that can better utilize his talents, but his cap figure exceeds $4M annually for three years beyond this season because the Flyers are insane, which is going to make even the most cap-compliant teams hesitant to make a deal.

Asked if he still has plenty to offer, Lecavalier was emphatic.

“Oh, definitely,” he said, per USA Today, after being benched against the San Jose Sharks. “Yeah. I’m not a different player than last year. I didn’t think I had a really good season last year. I had a great start and had a lot of opportunities the first 20 games and then I got hurt (for nine games with a back injury) and after that not as much. I just want to work hard and get back out there. I know what I can do. I believe in what I can do.”

The Flyers might have better luck making a deal after this season. While Lecavalier’s cap charge won’t change, he’ll be due $4.5 million for one season, then $3 million the next two, as opposed to the $6 million he’s due this season. That’s of little solace to both parties at present time.
