Despite the fact that Russell Wilson hasn’t played a single game for them or provided them with any real on field benefits, the Texas Rangers really like the Seahawks quarterback. In fact, they like him so much that they put him on their Triple-A roster to avoid losing him in the Rule 5 draft, according to CBS Sports.

The Rangers originally took Wilson last year with one of their own Rule 5 spots, surprising and appalling some people, especially Seattle fans (considering what division the Rangers play in), since Wilson obviously is not currently playing baseball. Not to mention he spends 99 percent of his time, even in the offseason, focused on football. Nevertheless, the Rangers invited him to spring training, which Wilson attended and his Rangers jerseys became a hot ticket item.

Obviously the Rangers want to keep the hype train going and, according to ESPN, plan to invite Wilson to spring training next year as well. Rangers GM Jon Daniels said the team will wait until Wilson’s season is finished before they officially extend the invite. Last season, Wilson was on the bench for the Rangers Cactus League game against the Cleveland Indians, but warmed up by fielding ground balls and taking part in double play drills.

Wilson did play baseball in college with NC State and briefly had a spot in the Colorado Rockies‘ farm system before hitting the NFL and taking it by storm. He hit .229 in two seasons with the Rockies, playing 61 games and managing to steal base 15 times.
