Amari Cooper of Alabama became the first Crimson Tide receiver to win the Fred Biletnikoff Awards, announced at the College Football Awards show.

Amari Cooper became the first Alabama receiver to catch 100 passes in a season in 2014.

Now he’s the first Crimson Tide pass catcher to win the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top wide receiver.

A junior from Miami, Cooper has caught 115 passes for 1,656 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had 13 catches in a game twice this year and 224 receiving yards twice—including hitting both marks in Alabama’s 55-44 win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Rashard Higgins of Colorado State and Kevin White of West Virginia were the other finalists.

Cooper will lead Alabama into the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 as the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff, where they will play No. 4 Ohio State.

In three seasons for the Tide, Cooper more than doubled his career reception total and now has 219 catches for 3,392 yards and 29 touchdowns in his career.

Presented by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, the award is named after Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff, who played at Florida State and professionally with the Oakland Raiders. Last year’s winner was Brandin Cooks of Oregon State.
