The Boston Red Sox signed MLB free agent starting pitcher Justin Masterson to bolster their rotation.

Justin Masterson was a member of the Boston Red Sox back in 2008 and 2009, and he is returning home after agreeing to a deal with Boston today. The Red Sox were looking to bolster their rotation this offseason, and they have taken a big step towards doing that with this move.

The terms of the contract were not released, and it will be very interesting to see how much they ended up giving him over how many years.

Masterson split last season between the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals, compiling a 7-9 record to go along with 5.88 ERA and 116 strikeouts. Those numbers simply aren’t very good, but he has still shown some flashes of being a very solid starter. Perhaps heading back to Boston where everything started will be exactly what he has needed.

No matter what ends up happening, the Red Sox are doing everything they can to improve and get back into contention this season. They have been very aggressive this offseason so far, but they were unable to pull off bringing Jon Lester back to Boston. Masterson is a solid addition, but he isn’t going to be the major upgrade that Boston needed.

Boston also traded away offensive power bat Yoenis Cespedes, which hasn’t been accepted very well by the fan base. Surely there will be more moves left before the offseason is over, but as of right now they are projected to have a better rotation than they had last season.

All of that being said, Masterson is officially a member of the Red Sox again and he will look to turn his career back around with the team that he started it with.
