The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have agreed on trade of Red Sox OF Yoenis Cespedes and a minor league pitcher for Tigers starter Rick Porcello.

Multiple sources have confirmed that the Boston Red Sox will send a minor league pitchers and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for starting pitcher Rick Porcello. The Red Sox had long been rumored to want a high-end starting pitcher and once they failed to sign free agent and former Red Sox starter Jon Lester, the team turned its attention to the trade market, where they found a willing partner in Detroit.

Tigers beat reporter Jason Beck confirmed the deal after CJ Nitkowski first announced it. The move appears to be a win-win for the two clubs that failed to meet expectations last season. The Tigers had World Series aspirations after they dealt for starter David Price at the trade deadline last season. Along with Justin Verlander and Porcello, the Tigers should have had a premium playoff rotation.

Instead they were unceremoniously booted from the first round of AL playoffs and left to once again clean up the mess. The team now hopes it has addressed some offensive woes with the big bat and bigger arm of Yoenis Cespedes, who will play for his third team since the beginning of the 2014 MLB campaign.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, get the starting pitcher they’ve coveted. At just 26 years old, Rick Porcello, who went 15-13 with a 3.43 ERA and 129 strikeouts against 41 walks in 204.2 innings in 2014, is a premium starting option who is just coming into his own. The Tigers haven’t had the stoutest infield defense, which has mired evaluation of Porcello. As it stands, Boston should feel good about having landed another solid piece for their rotation.
