Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton showed up at the stadium Thursday and is moving pretty well after his Tuesday car accident that left him with fractures in his back.

Cam Newton has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game, and that hasn’t changed, but he showed up at the Panthers facility on Thursday, and that’s a pretty good sign. According to a story by Pro Football Talk, Panthers coach Ron Rivera told the media that the quarterback came in to watch some film and do some rehab. Rivera said Newton was sore, but moving well and in good spirits.

Newton suffered two broken transverse processes in his back from the accident, the same injuries that kept Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo sidelined for a game. The wreck ended with Newton’s truck flipped on its top and according to police at the scene, could have been much worse had Newton not been wearing his seat belt.

As anyone who’s been in a car accident knows, the residual soreness in the days following a wreck is often the worst part. Newton probably feels like he just played another football game, two days after actually playing one. An extra week of rest is likely much needed.

"“I won’t expose him,” Rivera said. “I don’t want to put him in a bad position.” (via ABC News)"

So Newton will not play, but instead his backup in Derek Anderson will start as the Panthers try to keep their dim playoff hopes alive against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
