Canadian hockey fans are able to breathe a little sigh of relief.

Erie Otters forward and top NHL prospect Connor McDavid is present at Team Canada’s training camp for the upcoming World Junior Championship tournament and is skating with the team. McDavid has not played since he suffered a fractured hand in a game on Nov. 12 during a fight.

McDavid had the cast on his hand taken off earlier in the week and was cleared to skate. However, he has yet to be cleared for contact. Team Canada head coach Benoit Groulx is still not sure whether or not McDavid will be ready for the beginning of the tournament, but he is optimistic and considers McDavid day-to-day.

“We’re going to talk with Connor tomorrow and obviously it’s great news for us to have him on the ice to skate,” coach Benoit Groulx told The Canadian Press Wednesday. “We’re going to discuss with him how he feels and he’s going to be monitored by the doctor.

The tournament will begin on Dec. 26, which is also when Canada’s opening game takes place against Slovakia. The tournament will run through Jan. 5, with the finals beginning on Jan. 2.

The big attraction to this year’s tournament is the match-up between the two top NHL prospects, Team Canada’s Connor McDavid and Team USA’s Jack Eichel.

You may think that Team USA is hoping McDavid can’t play.  Knowing how competitive these kids are, Team USA and the rest of the teams in this tournament are going to want McDavid there so they can play against the best competition possible. Especially Eichel, who I’m sure wants to make his case for the number one overall pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.
