ESPN analyst Jon Gruden said his brother Jay, head coach of the Washington Redskins, is ‘in the middle of a mess’ given the team’s quarterback situation.
This isn’t exactly breaking news, but the Washington Redskins are a hot mess. They traded a fortune in draft picks for a quarterback who appears unable to handle an NFL defense right now, and coach Jay Gruden could very well be stuck with said quarterback for a while. Gruden’s brother, former head coach Jon Gruden, lamented his brother’s situation, which he called a ‘mess’.

“The Redskins aren’t there yet, and they need to find, A, who their quarterback is, and, B, they need to find a nucleus of players they can win with, and all that combined has made a mess in Washington, and you’re right, unfortunately my brother’s in the middle of it, and I wish him luck,” Jon Gruden said on Mike & Mike, as transcribed by PFT.
Robert Griffin III has been a mess in his third season, the first under head coach Jay Gruden, and this year injury has been a less convenient excuse. His reads and basic reactions to defenses have been brutal and now it’s clear Gruden can’t deal with Griffin under center.
So what happens if the ever-meddlesome Washington Redskins owner, Dan Snyder, insists upon RG3 as the team’s quarterback next season?
“Well, you probably look for a new job at some point if the quarterback doesn’t perform in your offense or for your team,” Jon Gruden said. “I mean, that’s the reality of it. If you don’t get the quarterback playing well you’re going to have a hard time surviving in pro football.”
We may find out shortly after the end of this NFL season just what Snyder has in mind for this latest failed experiment, but don’t be surprised if he takes another spin on the coaching carousel in January in favor of giving Griffin another chance in a new system.
