New York Jets owner Woody Johnson wouldn’t commit one way or the other on whether coach Rex Ryan or GM John Idzik would have jobs after this season’s end.

As the New York Jets trudge to the merciful end of this 2014 NFL season, owner Woody Johnson spoke with the media to neither confirm nor deny pretty much anything. He left all possibilities open, which could prove more telling of coach Rex Ryan’s future than any scathing condemnation.

“I’m in the business — I got to win games,” Johnson told the Daily News. “I’m a fan, I represent the fans. We’re both frustrated by this. Ultimately, I am going to have to look for something that I believe is going to right the ship, whether it’s the current way, the way we are doing it now with the people we have now or going down a different pathway.”

So would that mean anything is possible? Even the retention of Rex Ryan beyond this season? “I’m looking at everything. I’m analyzing what’s happened and why it’s happened.”

Sure, but what about Rex?

“I’ve always thought he’s a very good coach,” Johnson said. “He’s an excellent coach, excellent teacher. The fans are going to want to see something different. They’re not going to let us get along and I don’t want to do exactly the same thing. So it’s going to be either the way we coach or the way we approach it. It could be with the same people. It might be with different people. That’s the case each and every year.”

That sounds like a man who doesn’t want to fire Rex Ryan, but clearly feels like he has no other choice.

What about GM John Idzik? After all, the poor guy is just in his second year as Jets GM.

“There’s been a lot of pressure on John,” he said. “This is a team sport. There are a lot of people involved.”

He’s a tough interview, this Woody Johnson, and it doesn’t appear that we’ll be getting any hints as to the future of Ryan or Idzik before season’s end, but if we were wagering, we’d say you can expect both to be finding new employers once the regular season ends.
