Marcus Mariota of Oregon won the Maxwell Award, presented to the top college football player of the year, his third big trophy of the day on Thursday.
Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota continued to add to his awards haul Thursday night, adding the Maxwell Award to the Walter Camp and Davey O’Brien awards earlier in the day.
Mariota beat out Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon—the Doak Walker Award winner as top running back—and Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott.

Gordon and Mariota will be in New York Saturday night for the presentation of the Heisman Trophy, along with the other finalist, Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Mariota led the Ducks to a 12-1 record this season and a berth in the inaugural College Football Playoff. Oregon will face Florida State in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 in one of the CFP semifinal games.
On the season, Mariota has completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 3,783 yards and 38 touchdowns with just two interceptions and has also run for 669 yards and 14 TDs.
A junior from Honolulu, Mariota has thrown for 10,115 yards and 101 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions in his 39 collegiate games in three seasons.
Mariota also has 28 rushing touchdowns in his career while also hauling in two touchdown catches.
This year, he leads the nation with 10.1 yards per pass attempt and an efficiency rating of 186.1.
Mariota threw for five touchdowns in a win at Washington State on Sept. 20, when he was 21-for-25 for 329 yards and rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown in a win at Utah on Nov. 8.
The Maxwell Award is presented to the top college football player each year by the Maxwell Football Club. It is named for Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, a Swarthmore College football player, coach and sportswriter.
A.J. McCarron of Alabama was last year’s winner.
