Referee Helps Dalton Prout Get To Bench After Groin Shot
By Cory Buck
Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Dalton Prout blocked a puck with his cup, which led to a great struggle to get him back to the bench, aided by an on-ice official.
Critics of NHL officiating just decreased by one after Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Dalton Prout was helped off the ice by a referee following a gnarly shot block that Prout took square in the cup. He falls in a heap of pain, of course, but it’s what happens next that holds the most intrigue.

That’s an unmistakable look in all of sports or life in general, folks. It’s the look of a man hopelessly mired in the spiral of pain unique to a ‘cup shot’ in hockey or its real-life equivalent. You know there won’t be any lasting pain, but the present pain is enough to convince you this could be the end of the world.
That’s what Prout’s body language reads to us as he limps behind his own net, takes a check, then makes his way back up the ice with the help of a referee before heading straight back for the locker room.
Remember kids, protect thy jewels, and if there is a breach, lay on thy back and breath slowly until the pain melts away. We promise that eventually you’ll feel better.
