MLB Free Agency News: The St. Louis Cardinals and Mark Reynolds have agreed to a contract
First baseman Mark Reynolds will be the newest signing of the St. Louis Cardinals; however, Reynolds must pass a physical to make the signing official.
Jon Heyman broke the story on his twitter account on Thursday.
Last season, Reynolds hit 22 home runs and totaled 45 RBIs in 130 games with the Milwaukee Brewers, but his batting average was a measly .196, and Reynolds struck out 122 times.

The signing is interesting from the St. Louis Cardinals. I don’t see why they need a player like Reynolds, a single-position player. Technically, Reynolds can play third base, as well, and did in 29 games for the Brewers last season, but I don’t think it’s realistic to count on Reynolds as a backup third baseman for any length of time.
Reynolds does bolster the Cardinals’ bench that could have used his power hitting in the NLCS to get by the San Francisco Giants. On top of that, Reynolds also is the perfect National League Designated Hitter.
By that I mean, he’s the perfect player to throw out in interleague play because he’s a high-risk, high-reward hitter. In his eight seasons in the league, Reynolds has hit 224 home runs, but he also strikes out at a ridiculously high rate.
When the Cardinals go to American League ball parks, Reynolds is a nice insurance bat off the bench.
