Dallas Stars‘ forward Ryan Garbutt has been suspended for three games after slew-footing Winnipeg Jets’ defenseman Dustin Byfuglien.

Dallas Stars’ forward Ryan Garbutt is paid to be a pest.  It’s his job to get into the heads of his opponents and get them off their game.

There is normally two ways to do this.

One is to play your opponent hard.  Fore-check hard, be physical, maybe chirp at your opponent a bit to get them mad.  Doing these things can frustrate the opposition and possible get them off their game a bit, or maybe even make them take a penalty against you.

Then, there’s the way Ryan Garbutt decided to go during Tuesday night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. Late in the second period, with the Stars trailing 4-2, Garbutt skated past Jets’ goaltender Michael Hutchinson, sticking his leg out and tripping him to the ice. Garbutt received a minor penalty for the trip.

Then, late in the third period, with the Stars trailing 5-2 at this point, Garbutt pursued a loose puck with Jets’ defenseman Dustin Byfuglien.  The two came together, and Garbutt proceeded to stick his leg out again and trip Byfuglien hard to the ice.  The Stars, already shorthanded at the time, were now down two men as Garbutt received another minor penalty for the trip.

This way of being a pest usually ends up doing more harm than good. Which is seen, as the Stars ended up losing the game and Garbutt ended up being suspended for the slew-footing incident for three games without pay.

Garbutt has a reputation already for being a bit of a dirty player, and this will only make it worse. It’s an extremely dangerous play and there is absolutely no reason for it.
