There’s been speculation recently that the team is getting ready to deal one of their goaltenders, but they might want to hold on to both these guys for a little while longer.
The Sabres shocked everyone when they went 6-1-0 towards the end of November. Fans started panicking that the goaltenders are making it impossible to tank for McDavid with any kind of credibility — but as the team sits on back-to-back victories over two of the biggest threats in the Western Conference, they’re looking a bit like a team that doesn’t need to tank at all.
A quick scan of their roster helps this make a bit more sense; once this group stopped looking shocked every time they scored a goal, they quietly developed into one of the most well-balanced developing rosters in the league. They picked Brian Gionta and Josh Gorges to lead their giant pack of developing young players… much better move than the Oilers, who tasked Andrew Ference with this, or the Flyers, who left it to Vinny Lecavalier.
The youth corps they’ve amassed over the last couple of seasons or so, though, is beyond impressive — with guys like Tyler Ennis (who has eight goals this seaon?!?!), Zemgus Girgensons (who actually has nine goals), and Marcus Foligno on offense, then Rasmus Ristolainen and Tyler Myers on defense, this team is becoming more and more exciting to watch.
The Sabres are still eighth in the Atlantic Division, but they’re somehow only getting better as the season goes on. Combine what’s looking like a nice core group with three first-round and two second-round picks in the upcoming draft, and this team might actually be a threat sooner than we all expected.
